Egg Donation for Intended Parents

Helping Families Grow Through Egg Donation

The California Center for Reproductive Medicine (CACRM) is pleased to offer an exceptional egg donation program for our established patients. Egg donation for intended parents is a successful family building treatment to have a baby.

Egg donation offers women the opportunity to become mothers when they do not have competent eggs. Egg donation restores pregnancy potential and reverses the age-related decline in implantation and birth rates in older women.

Our patients may need egg donors because they are older, have premature egg failure, don’t want to pass a genetic disease to their children or have experienced numerous pregnancy or IVF losses. Male same-sex couples and single men who need an egg donor can still have a genetic link to their child using one or both partners’ sperm.

Egg Donor Recipient Evaluation

If we have not already done so, we will conduct a complete physical examination and history on the intended mother, including a pelvic exam and an assessment of her uterine cavity with a hysteroscopy. We also provide standard pre-conceptual testing and counseling.

We offer counseling to egg donor recipients who would like to discuss the decision to use donated eggs, how they feel about the loss of a genetic connection to their children, and how they might disclose egg donation in the future.

For older women, egg donation provides a lifeline to motherhood with a healthy oocyte and an opportunity to experience pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding. But we still want to ensure the intended mother is healthy and fit and prevent pregnancy-related complications like preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and cardiovascular issues.

How We Find Your Egg Donor

Egg donors are generous young women between the ages of 18 and 30. Candidates who have proven fertility are most desirable. Usually, they are motivated by both the desire to help others become parents and by financial compensation.

Egg donors are referred by friends or family members known to CACRM or learn about us through advertisements, especially at colleges and universities.

Screening, Testing and Evaluating Egg Donors

CACRM egg donors complete an extensive online application where we can learn about their health, fertility, family medical history, and educational background, social and sexual risk factors. We request a personal essay describing their reasons for being a donor and photographs of the donor from her childhood, teenage years, and as an adult.

Donors will have appropriate genetic testing based on professional society-recommended genetic screening, family history, and ethnic background.  Donors are tested, via expanded carrier screening, for possible genetic conditions that can be passed to the offspring. They also undergo a family risk assessment by a genetic counselor. Applicants with evidence of serious genetic disease will be excluded.

A licensed mental health professional will provide counseling and psychological testing of the donor, as well as interview her about her motivation to donate, and willingness and ability to comply with the donation process. We want to make sure the young woman is informed and knowledgeable about what to expect now and in the future. Her monetary compensation will be tied to the time she invests in donating, her inconvenience, and the physical and emotional demands of the egg donation procedure.

We follow the American Society for Reproductive Medicine guidelines for donor compensation.

CACRM adheres to all FDA, federal, and state regulations for egg donation as well as the additional donor identity disclosure law.

Egg Donor Database

CACRM has egg donors ready to help you become parents. We provide information on each donor, including medical and genetic background, educational history, information about immediate family, and other relevant data. We will work with you to find the best match based on your preferences and characteristics desired. Everyone’s goal is for you to have a healthy baby.

Our experienced egg donors have already been medically screened and undergo genetic risk assessment and genetic testing for hereditary diseases. We educate donors about potential risks, including ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).

Once you make your selection and after the egg donor has medical clearance, we will refer you to a lawyer. Your attorney will draft a legal agreement. The egg donor will have her own representation to review the contract for her signature.

The egg donor will begin her medications for the IVF cycle only after medical and legal clearance is obtained.

Anonymous Egg Donation

Our egg donation program can be anonymous although, if requested, you may have a directed “known” donor.

An anonymous donor will not disclose identifying information to the intended parents and visa versa. There will not be any contact between parents, the donor, and the donor-conceived child.

A known donor is someone the intended parents know personally, such as a family member or friend, or they are introduced to in person or virtually with identifying information exchanged.  If your anonymous donor approves, you may request to meet her.

The Egg Donation Process
